Swirlydoos Round Robin-July, week 4

The Round Robin for July, Salute to the Uniform.

My team did not have player for week 4 so I decided to play again!

I was honored to attend a funeral for a Civil War veteran. His cremains sat unclaimed in a St. Louis funeral home for over 100 years. His family was located and now he lies next to his wife.

The twist: use old supplies. The papers I used are from the August 2012 Swirlydoos kit.

After oooooing and aaaaahing over all the papers and embellies in the kit, I picked out the papers and embellies I would use for the sketch challenge. I like to do that one first as it seems to get my mojo working. Here is a picture of my parents on their wedding day. I added the cameos from last month's embellishment add-on.

Here's a close-up.

This beautiful sketch is your inspiration, now get creating!

Our July sketch challenge runs until August 15th, and is open to EVERYONE! Upload your layout into the "Belle Fleur Sketch" section of the Swirlydoos Facebook Gallery and you will be entered to win a fantastic prize pack from Swirlydoos! Check the sketch challenge thread in our forums to see what the designers and other members have created using this sketch for inspiration!

This is the sketch challenge prize:

Next, I worked on a layout with that gorgeous fan chippie. I added some White Sands texture paste, Glimmer Mist, and some embossing powder. The papers were perfect for a vintage ancestor page. I added some flowers that were in a wine box purchased from the Swirly store.

Here's another vintage layout. The papers were screaming vintage wedding!

The wooden pieces were part of the main kit.

My daughter sent some selfies of the St. Louis Color Run that I used for this page. The colors were perfect. One of the flowers was made from the purple crepe paper that we received in a past Swirlydoos technique add-on. I used the Tim Holtz Tattered Florals die.

Here's that crepe paper flower.

I like the twine that was part of the main kit. I used it to frame some of the pictures.

Here's some inspiration for the All that Flutters challenge that is hosted every month at Swirlydoos. My step-daughter just graduated from high school this May. I thought these papers were just right. I used flowers from the flower add-on as well as some from my stash.

I brushed the edges of the Prima flower with the resin face using some LuminArte' in Boysenberry. Then, I misted it with a pearl mist to make the color bleed a little. More of that cool twine to frame the pictures here, too.

You have until midnight, eastern time, July 25th to complete the hop. Winners will be announced on the Swirlydoos Blog on 7/28. In order to qualify to win here is what you need to do:

Round Robin July 2015

I rushed home to take a picture before the sun went down. So, here’s my lift of Krissy’s fab page for the Round Robin. I scrapped another picture of my pilot grandfather. The twist: I used papers from Looking Glass kit from June 2011 and some of the metal embellies are well over three years old. I had the same chippie but decided to switch it up in the end. I used Rae’s technique on the chippie with PP and embossing powders. I know this is a masculine lo, but that spot just screamed for that red flower! No joke!

Round Robin June 2015, Week 2, A Salute to those in Uniform

I think the Fourth of July has us thinking about those who have served. So, this month's theme for the Round Robin was, A Salute to those in Uniform. I naturally thought of my Dad and Grandpa. This layout is my Grandfather.

The twist was to use scrappy stuff that is over a year old so I dug out a Swirly kit from March 2012 and used some letters that were over 2 years old. The metal pieces are from a shopping trip we took while at Swirly camp 2-3 years ago. The metal chain is from the June 2015 kit. I deconstructed some of the chippie pieces. My tut for this is posted here. And, you can see more examples here and here. I used the same title, Let Freedom Ring, because I kept humming that song while making this! Nothing else seemed to work.

June Swirlydoos Reveal Boy's Night Out and bonus Flower Tutorial

Good morning, Swirly Savages! I am pumped to be able to share my first DT creations with you using the June kit, Boy's Night Out. Despite the name, the kit can be used for masculine layouts or sweet girly ones.

Since we celebrated Father's Day in June, I decided to make a layout of my father. I always start with the sketch challenge. So, this layout is of my dad and I many moons ago.

The  leaves, drywall tape, and black embossing paste were from my stash. I made the flowers and will share the tut with you today. The "Father" die cut is from the embellishment add on. All the other elements were from the main kit. I altered the fiber by snipping the loops on one side and pulling the thread that was wrapped around the loops to create all the twirly fibers.

And, the flowers? Well, the savages snagged all the flower add ons so I had to make my own!

Here's a look at them.

I used to sew my daughter's Easter and Christmas dresses when she was younger and I have a lot of sewing patterns that I no longer use. But, now I do have a use for them! I made these flowers out of sewing pattern tissue paper. Very simple. Even if you don't sew, you can pick up old patterns at garage sales.
Keep the sewing pattern folded so you get many die cut layers all at once. I used the TH Tattered Florals die.

Then, pull out about half of the layers that have been cut. Here's a quick look at how many I pulled out to create the flowers.

Next, you will need to use a hole punch to make a hole through the center of all the layers.

Now, put a metal brad through the hole to secure all the layers together. Then, you can begin gathering up the layers around the brad.

Continue scrunching up layers of tissue around the brad, like so.

After I pulled and scrunched about 15-20 layers, the flower looked like this.

Now, once the center is created it's okay to begin pulling up multiple layers and scrunching them to fill out the flower.

There you have it! I used two different sizes on the sketch challenge and they worked perfect. The tissue flowers are perfect for heritage pages.

Give it a whirl! I'd love to see what you create!

I loved the flowers so much I used them on my next layout, too!
This is an example for the All That Flutters Challenge. I love to enter this challenge every month because I love butterflies on my pages.

What I love about this page is the fact that I found out my grandma is a scrapper, too. She started when she was just out of high school. My mom and I went to visit and look at her albums. I was able to scan pictures from her albums to scrap myself.

This page features some pictures I scanned from her album.
Again, more of the tissue flowers on this one.

The last one that I will share today is more on the girly side.
More pictures from my grandma's albums. These pictures of her are priceless.

I have created three more layouts and shared those on the Swirlydoos Facebook page. You can see all the June layouts here

And, here's a sneak of something I have in store for you later this month. What do you do when you get down to the scraps of your kit? Do you toss them? Make a card? Keep them for later (and, later never arrives)?  Well, here's what's left of my June kit.

I'll show you what to do when you get down to the bare bones of your kit.

Going to the dark side

Created with the Swirlydoos June kit, Boy's Night Out

It only seemed appropriate to scrap a motorcycle with these papers. This picture was taken in 1970 while we lived in the Philippines. This is Dad's bike and I believe it was a 1969 Honda.

I used papers from the kit and added TH stars, TH bookplate, black embossing paste, and black Smooch. The stamps include a Prima stamp from a prior kit as well as CE stamps from my stash. The circle die is Memory Box. tfl!

Swirlydoos June Reveal, long awaited.

Boy's Night Out

Swirlydoos is finally getting back on track after a hacker brought the site down in March. Krissy has a new site up and running so go check it out here.

Now that we have revealed the kit I can share another DT layout created with this manly kit.

Even though the kit suggests a masculine theme, it can still be used to created girly layouts as I did here. My grandmother is featured in this layout. I used the main kit and the embellishment add on. The drywall tape and leaves are from my stash. All other items are from the kit.

If you’re ready to start getting perfectly coordinated, top of the line scrapbook kits delivered to your door, please visit us at www.swirlydoos.com. Mention my name, Jan, when you subscribe and you’ll receive 10% off your first kit, AND a coupon good for 30% off your entire purchase in the Swirlydoos.com store!

In Honor of Father's Day

This is my first layout as a design team member for Swirlydoos. I used the June sketch to create this layout of my father and I.

The papers, wooden Prima pieces, ribbon, alpha stickers, and black studs are from the main kit. I added drywall tape, leaves, black diecut, black embossing paste, Kaisercraft flower, and handmade tissue flowers from my stash. The "father" diecut was in the embellishment add-on.

Using the June kit, Boys Night, create a layout, project, or card using anything that flutters. i.e butterflies, dragonflies bees, ladybugs, birds, fairies…etc!

You can share your project here and please put your entry in the FB gallery. If you don’t have a FB account uploading your entry here will still count!

Please note in the description or title it’s for the June challenge.

Once the challenge is closed we will vote on our two favorites to determine the winner.
Example:

This a scrapbook page of my Mom and Grandma looking at my Grandma's scrapbooks! She has about 30 albums from her high school days to present.  I really cherished the time we spent sharing her scrapbooks, scanning some of her pictures so I could scrap them, and just learning that we shared this hobby.
